Six months ago, his friend went dark and left one address behind. Former recon scout Fang Yuan comes to Salt Lake City to find him. A scream cuts his first meal short. By sunrise, the air itself has turned red.

Black screen. A chime. Zhao Lei's voice, a smoker's low rasp, six months late. On the map, a red pin marks 4700 Wasatch Road, seven miles from where Fang Yuan sits. He clocked the fire exit the moment he walked in.

Rule one: aim for the head

Nobody in the chat agrees on anything else.

  1. Every rule costs someone

    Does a scratch turn you? Someone in the chat says no, only a bite does. That's how it works in the movies. Fang Yuan has three scratches down his left forearm.

  2. Blue means alive. Red means dead.

    Fang Yuan wears a cobalt jacket. The redder the air gets, the harder he is to miss.

  3. The end starts in the group chat

    Twenty-two hikers in one group chat. A minute ago, one of them was complaining about the heat at Arches and another wanted photos of Temple Square. By the time Fang Yuan is bolted into a motel room, the chat is at 99+.

  4. Is he still human?

    In the trailer, a spear pins him to a pillar and the mycelium fills the hole it left. Whatever saved him is growing into him.

Out of downtown, across the valley.

The first scream comes from near Temple Square. Zhao Lei's address sits seven miles out on the east side, at 4700 Wasatch Road. Red spores rise off downtown and spread street by street. The Great Salt Lake lies off to the northwest.

Mycelium

Under the city, half a parking garage has caved in, rebar sticking out like ribs. Puffballs pulse in heaps of pink paste. Joseph's right forearm is now six feet of barbed whip. Fang Yuan takes a spear through the chest, and the mycelium stitches him shut. Then he goes after Joseph.
